Kendall Katwalk Hiking Guide

Absolutely perfect day for a hike! The sun was out and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. Trailhead is really easy to find and the parking lot was near full at around 9am. A NW Forest Pass is required to park, so be sure to purchase one. Also, be on the lookout for horses. Be prepared to yield, so not to spook them. Keep an eye out on the ground as well, there may be droppings.

The hike is not very thigh burning, but is quite long. The switchbacks aren't too frequent and the trail isn't too steep. It starts off like any other trail, with a diverse range of trees and shrubs along the path.

After about 3 miles, the trail really opens up. The views are stunning as the elevation gets higher. The landscape really changes further into the mountains. The rock begins to look more bronze and the trail gets a little more rugged. To the south, there are views of Mt. Rainier (if there are no clouds). About 200-300 yards (15 mins?) before the Katwalk, there's a nice little rest area. Off the trail, there are places to sit and gaze at the steep, jagged mountains of the Cascades. Absolutely gorgeous!

The Katwalk is impossible to miss. The trail is completely open. Along the west side of the trail is a steep climb up the mountain. Over to the east, there is an extremely steep drop. Be very cautious when crossing the catwalk!

For a some bonus views, one more mile will lead to Gravel Lake. The trail will descend to an alpine lake surrounded by trees and large rocks. It's a really nice place to rest before turning back around. We took a quick nap in the sun on the rocks on the north side of the lake. There are also backpacking campsites around the lake as well.

This is one of the best hikes I've ever been on. The views are spectacular, the climb isn't too difficult, and there aren't many people despite stunning weather. I would highly recommend it!
